Campsites

Our campsites are designed for maximum comfort, relaxation and convenience.  Seasonal and environmental sectors, as well as zoning, provided a basis for this design (consistent with permaculture Principle #7, design from patterns to details).
Some benefits of sector analyses include:
  • Cool summers with full shade and channeled breezes.
  • Warm winters in full sunlight and protection from winter winds.
  • Unhindered views of a beautiful Appalachian valley to the southeast.
  • Privacy and comfort behind well-placed privacy screens.
All prices include meals provided by surrounding food forests and production area.

Campsites Key
Shade trees
Large deciduous trees provide summer shade, but allow winter sunlight and year-round views.  Support hammocks, swings, bird-houses, climbers, and Ewok villages.

*Nuttal Oaks were chosen for fast growth, leafy canopies and acorns that attract squirrels and deer.

Bamboo
Bamboo on the north side or path side of campsites are excellent year-round providers of privacy and/or windbreaks.

*Various varieties of fargesia were selected as they are cold tolerant, clumping (non-evasive), shade loving and tall.
Evergreens
Evergreens serve as alternative privacy screens and windbreaks.

*Spruce and Salix are suitably thick, fast growing and maintenance free.
Ground covers/grasses
Ground covers and grasses proliferate in the surrounding areas.

*Many species of nitrogen-fixing, soil conditioning, food producing and insect attracting ground covers are planted, according to Principle "value diversity" (#10).

*Species success and conditions such as shade, soil, drainage and foot traffic are documented according to Principles "observe" (#1) and "accept feedback" (#4).
Outdoor grill
Each site offers a personal, convenient means of cooking

(Designated fuel forests provide our firewood.  Please do not remove and burn organic matter from surrounding ecosystem.)

Brick oven
Provides larger cooking capacity for group sites.
Tent platform
Stilted wooden platforms provide a dry, level surface for pitching tents and avoids trampling of vegetation and soil biota.
Picnic table
Each site offers comfortable furniture for eating, sitting or socializing.  Constructed from trees felled on site.
Path
Access walkways are mulched and graded for rainwater absorption into swales or plant systems.
